What Is Aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy is a holistic healing treatment that uses essential oils to enhance physical and emotional health. It may help manage pain, ease digestion, boost relaxation, improve mood, and relieve menstrual symptoms.
When inhaled, aromatherapy stimulates your nervous system (brain, spinal cord and nerves). This means aromatherapy starts a chain reaction of signals to your brain and chemical responses throughout your body. This activity begins once you start smelling an essential oil.
There’s strong evidence that aromatherapy may help you manage stress, sleep disorders, and early labor. The most common methods of applying essential oils in aromatherapy include inhalation. Inhalation is typically achieved using diffusers, sprays, or inhalers and is commonly employed to influence mood and relieve respiratory issues. The benefits of aromatherapy are extensive. Physically, it can alleviate pain, improve digestion, enhance the immune system, and treat various skin conditions. Mentally and emotionally, aromatherapy is known for reducing stress, anxiety, and depression, improving sleep quality, and enhancing overall mood.
Aromatherapy is considered safe however, essential oils can cause side effects. Some can irritate your eyes, skin, or mucous membranes in your nose. They can also cause mild allergic reactions in some people. It’s always advisable to speak with your doctor or a qualified physiotherapist before you undergo aromatherapy.

How Does Aromatherapy Work?
Many experts believe our sense of smell may play a role in how aromatherapy works. The “smell” receptors in your nose communicate with parts of your brain that serve as a vault for emotions and memories. When you breathe in essential oil molecules, some researchers believe they stimulate these parts of your brain and influence physical, emotional, and mental health. This is because certain scents can trigger emotional responses and influence mood, stress levels, and overall mental well-being. For example, inhaling citrus oils like lemon and orange can uplift mood and energize the mind. It is thought by scientists that the activity of the nerve signal passing through this region causes mood change by altering blood chemistry.
Aromatherapy massage is a popular way of using essential oils because it works in several ways at the same time. Your skin absorbs essential oils and you also breathe them in. The skin, being the largest organ of the body, provides an effective medium for essential oils to penetrate and exert their effects. Essential oils like chamomile and lavender are commonly used in massage to relieve muscle tension and promote relaxation.
Most essential oils have antibacterial properties; some are antiviral, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory. They also contain antioxidants which can help to prevent cell damage and protect against the build-up of toxic waste in skin cells, thereby helping reduce the signs of aging.
The majority of essential oil constituents leave the body within hours, mainly via the kidneys, although their effects can last much longer within the tissues.
